The Ideology
We have witnessed the evolution of enterprise work design constituents in the past two decades and transformed additions. (I will not call it new but a self appraised and developed reflection)
I am excited to share my view and rationale to complete the Digital Transformation philosophy – “Digital FABRIC”.
The People, Process, Technology model (famously addressed as PPT) has a new volume to it. In due course, technology had taken precedence, and there was a blood rush to embrace technology. This was when we heard the quotes, like – every company is a technology company, which promoted the growth in the technocrats population. Technology acquaintance was at its peak, and Platforms soon were at the nucleus of the enterprise’s operating ecosystem. Various components converged on to these platforms with unique people skillset to form a product focusing on user-experience and democratized the way on consumption (Cloud, Opensource). In recent years, the need for partnerships, onboarding emerging technologies, Advance capabilities, and virtualization of infrastructure, processes, and data has welcomed the Digitalization of all the above entities, which we all know as Digital Transformation.
We have been close to the digital transformation initiative and dealt with mixed experiences in the course of implementing and scaling within organizations.
“Digital Fabric” – is the arranged state of related work design constituents that are intertwined for seamless integration, interaction, and interconnection.
From hype-cycle to Life-cycle
The organization perimeter covers the transactions between source, target, and medium by which the services are delivered. People are, have, and will be the epicenter of every global reform. In my opinion, Digital transformation is perceived in a way that is convenient and suits the respective enterprise. Digitization of data/process, employee/user convenience, end-user experience, and interface compatibility, are primary areas that kick-started this initiative. We have chosen a few constituents and rushed all in to name it digital transformation. Only Automation, Customer experience, or any other attribute is only partial adoption of this phenomenon.
Digital COE will own the responsibility to establish this Digital fabric enveloping an enterprise with desired technologies, components, and practices as per the set objectives. Digital fabric is the tactical layer, where all five layers will interact and complement one another.
The restraint always has been a fragmented approach with defined boundaries to collaborate, which has been the significant cause for derailing or decelerating the Digital Drive. The approach is to onboard all these five work design constituents on to one Digital team that has autonomous control over resources. The discussion of centralized, federated, and hybrid will seep in obviously, but that is to the disposal of the enterprise longterm vision. (Organization size, Strategy, Magnitude of the initiative)
HOW will digital fabric help?
- Digital fabric is going to be a holistic approach to build the digital culture and digital practice pan enterprise.
- These five layers aggregate into a firm digital fabric, and this is the theoretical method to meet current and future demands. (Every Org. has these layers in different capacities, concentrations, and combinations).
- The alignment and interlocking of them are imperative to start seeing results.
- Work tasks in every layer (People, Process, Platform, Product, Partnership) will help to build a catalog that holds and maps all the independent fabrics to braid into one smooth resilient Digital Fabric. (Engagement, Ownership, functionality)
- Digital Fabric will trigger intrinsic & extrinsic digital transformation, which brings in the possibility of infusing digitization, integration, and collaboration between end-user:service-provider transactional processes, platforms, products, and partnerships
At some point in time, all the layers are inevitable to align and complete the diversity of service/experience provisioning to thrive in the competitive market.
Please share your reflection, thoughts, and opinion to improvise this concept and shape this into a serviceable structure. I will elaborate on the Digital Fabric concept in my next corresponding releases.
